CBMNet Business Interaction Voucher Awarded

We are pleased to announce that we have awarded a CBMNet Business Interaction Voucher to Dr Claudio Angione, Teesside University and TeeGene Biotech Limited – Condition-specific engineering of Pseudomonas metabolism.

One of the main goals of metabolic engineering is to determine the best environmental condition in which a bacterium can grow in order to reach specific optimal output values from a range of objective functions chosen by the researcher. The generation of models of microorganisms allows optimising for import and export of chemicals across the membrane. An interesting extension of such methods, leaning towards genetic engineering, is able to optimise simultaneously two or more outputs of the model by finding the best gene expression and codon usage towards the overproduction of compounds of biological interest.
In this project, we will build and exploit a model of Pseudomonas that: (i) allows building and analysing further condition-specific models of Pseudomonas, and (ii) will predict the optimal metabolic and genetic engineering steps needed to overproduce chemicals of interest and simultaneously minimise byproduct formation in a multi-target fashion. As a result, we will be able to predict the most efficient way to engineer microorganisms producing industrially-relevant compounds, with a focus on rhamnolipids, currently needed for industrial applications ranging from cosmetics to bioremediation of organic and heavy metal contaminated environments.
